The Seniors of Paradise hula group began shortly after the organization was formed in 1982. In 1986 the group was disbanded and re-organized with Eve Henderson as the instructor. Eve started hula back in 1952 on the mainland and is still "Kumu" to this senior troupe. A few years ago the group adopted the name "Pua Kea Hula" and meets twice weekly (class is Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Activity Center in Paradise Park; and a practice session is held on Tuesdays at 9:30 at various members homes). The halau began with about 6 dancers and has grown until we now have over 20 active members. The foundation of the halau is love and caring -- for hula
and for one another. Pua Kea learns both traditional Hawaiian
and "hapa-haole" songs. Anyone 55 or over is invited
to join us for hula, group support, and EXERCISE (it really is
good for you). |
